Finding Films: DVDs and Videos

There are a number of ways to search SIMON for finding films in the library collection. 

Author Searching

Search by AUTHOR when looking for films by:
bulletdirector
bulletactor
bulletscreenwriter 

In the author search box, type the LAST NAME first.

When you've retrieved your results, click on the limit/sort search button (Limit/Sort). Pull down the material type menu and select film & video: 

MATERIAL type:

Title Searching

Search by TITLE when you know the title of the film. Enter as many of the words you know, in exact order.

Advanced Keyword Searching

If you are unsure of the title, use ADVANCED KEYWORD search. Keywords are derived from the title, notes, and subject terms. Enter words in any order and use AND between different words. You can include variant word endings by using the * as a truncation symbol. Limit the material type to film and video.

You can also use ADVANCED KEYWORD search to find films on a particular topic. Limit the material type to film and video.

To view a listing of all films in the library, do an ADVANCED KEYWORD search. In the search box, type ** (double asterisk). Limit the material type to film and video.

To find all films in a particular language, do an ADVANCED KEYWORD search. In the search box, type ** (double asterisk). Limit the language to English, French, German, Spanish, Japanese, or Chinese. Limit the material type to film and video.

Subject Searching

To find feature films, use the subject heading feature films.

To find documentaries, use the subject heading documentary films.

Locations

Films are shelved on the main floor.

bulletIf the location is Video Main Floor, the film will be in shelved by call number in the northwest corner, near the Government Documents Collection.
bulletIf the film's location is Videotape Circ Desk or Videotape  Reserves, it will be shelved behind the Circulation Desk. Ask for it by call number.
bulletDVDS are shelved behind the Circulation Desk. Ask for them by call number.

 

Film Loan Periods and Booking 

In general, the loan periods for films are 3 days for students and 1 week for faculty. If the film is designated as "reserve" or "circ desk," the loan period is 6 hours or 24 hours depending on faculty instructions. For more information, see the library's media page

Video booking is a support service for classroom instruction.  It sets aside films for group viewing on specific days.  For more information see the Video Booking Request page.

Viewing Films Outside the Classroom

There are a number of locations in the library building where you can view films.

bullet Main floor. There is a TV monitor and VCR located near the video collection in the northwest corner. Headphones and seating are available for four persons.
bulletMultimedia carrel 202 on the mezzanine has a VCR and TV monitor.
bulletThe McCormick Room has a TV monitor and VCR. It is available for group viewings. Make a reservation for this room by contacting  Linda King by e-mail at lking@ups.edu, (not by phone or visit). Your message should note ROOM REQUEST in the subject line. 
bulletThe Lib 020 Presentation Room has facilities for showing DVDs and videotapes. Reserve this room for group viewings by contacting the OIS help desk, 8585 or email trouble@ups.edu
bulletThe OIS Tech Center has viewing facilities. Contact the OIS help desk, 8585 or email trouble@ups.edu for more information.
bulletDVDs can be played on any computer in the library.

 

Borrowing Films from Other Libraries

You may borrow films from the Orbis Cascade Alliance, a consortium of libraries in Washington and Oregon. Search for films using the Summit catalog and request the items you need.
