Finding fiction in a college or university library is a bit tricky. Unlike a public library, there is no "fiction" section. Most fiction books are classified by literature and language. For example, Canadian novelist Margaret Atwood is found in PR 9199.3 for English literature in Canada. Sound confusing? Then try the tips and tricks listed below.
| Search SIMON by Author or Title: If you know the name of an author, choose the author search option. Type the author's name last name first followed by the first name. Ex. Clarke, Arthur If you know the title of a work, choose the title search option. Type the title in exact word order. Ex. 3001 the final odyssey

| Search SIMON by Keyword Search: Choose the keyword option on the main search menu and type the word fiction. You'll get lots of hits so use the limit option to restrict by date or by another word. |

| Search SIMON by Subject: There are many subject words that can be used to find fiction in SIMON using the Library of Congress Subject Heading option. Here are a few examples: Detective and Mystery Stories, Science Fiction, Western Stories, Ghost Stories, Horror Tales, Short Stories, Biographical Ficition, Historical Fiction, Love Stories, and Musical Fiction. To find others, ask a librarian at the reference desk.

| Browse the Shelves: Most fiction is found on the third and fourth floors. In general, books are grouped by language and literature. Ex. American literature is found under PS while all other English language literature is found under PR . For a more detailed listing, see the Library of Congress Call Number Guide.

| Use Reference Sources: There are a few reader's advisory books in the reference collection that may help you when you don't have a particular book in mind. The Fiction Catalog is a selective list of established and contemporary works of adult fiction either written in or translated into English. Each entry has a descriptive summary and there is a helpful subject index. The call number is Z 5916 W74 REF. Also recommended is The Reader's Catalog, an annotated selection of more than 40,000 of the best books in 208 categories. The call number is Z1035 .R26 1989 REF.
