Africa News provides fairly comprehensive to current news from and about Africa -- it links to reporting from more than 40 African news organizations. Search by topic, country, or region.

Channel Africa presents a collection of news items from Africa, compiled from shortwave,satellite, and Internet radio broadcasts by Channel Africa. Read, listen, and/or watch: Video, audio, and text files about music, sports, money markets, and news are available. To go directly to English language resources, click on Programmes in English. Electronic Journals and Newspapers on Africa is a directory of links to electronic journals and newspapers about Africa on the Internet, arranged alphabetically and presented by the Department of African Studies at Columbia University. A short description of each journal and newspaper is included.

News Resources: Africa presents links to news resources for Africa and individual countries within Africa. It offers access to radio, newspapers, newsletters, television news stations, and related resources.

Pan African News Agency (PANA) has continent wide partnerships with 48 national news agencies. In addition to daily news, PANA provides news archives back to 1997, and offers specialized reporting through weekly bulletins as follows : Monday - Environment,; Tuesday - Economics and Development; Wednesday - Science and Health; Friday - Africa Press Review.

US Africa Online "The one-stop source for up-to-date information on all of Africa" points to news from more than 60 different sources, including 40 top African news organizations. The site is managed by Africa News Service, a nonprofit agency. You can search by choosing a headline clicking on a regional, country or topical news section. Includes the Nigeria News Network and special reports on other areas of Africa.

Web Sites for Background, Policy and Anthropology

Africa South of The Sahara Stanford librarian Karen Fung provides an excellent site that links to information by country, by region, and by subject, such as human rights, women, environment and health.

Africabib Maintained by Davis Bullwinkle at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, this site provides free access to two African studies databases: 1) Africana Periodical Literature Bibliographic Database, indexing over 26,000 articles from over 235 English language African studies journals, and 2) AfricanWomen Bibliographic Database, which contains over 19,000 citations from 1986 to the present covering books, journal articles, theses, and conference papers.

African Human Rights Center is a joint project of the Makarere University Human Rights and Peace Center in Uganda, and the University of Minnesota Human Rights Center. It's a good place to start to gain an overview of human rights related issues in Africa. Go to Africa Related Links to find country specific information for Ghana, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Rwanda, South Africa, and other countries.

African Studies University of Pennsylvania The Country Specific page on this site is an easy to use resource that provides World Factbook information, country maps, and other web links.

APIC (Africa Policy Center) identifies critical policy issues in U.S./African relations; brings in diverse perspectives from African and U.S. groups in the policy process; and makes information and analysis accessible the public through electronic access to fulltext documents.

Center for African Studies: Governments, Elections, and International Government Organizations from the University of Illinois provides access to African government web pages and to U.S. and international agencies such as U.S. AID and the United Nations.

Center For World Indigenous Studies (CWIS) points to the Fourth World Documentation Project , which includes African documents. Also, follow the link from Indigenous Studies WWW Virtual Library to Indigenous Resources for Africa to find links for the !Kung, Akan, Amazigh/Berber, Masai,Tamazight, Hadzabe peoples, Ogoni, Oromia, Sukuma, and Zulu peoples, among others.

Contemporary Conflicts in Africa provides an overview of current and historical conflicts in Africa. It covers such topics as justice, human rights, and humanitarian operations.

Motherland Nigeria is maintained by the exhuberant "Boomie" O, who provides in-depth information on all aspects of Nigerian life. Of particular interest are the Peoples links, which provides access to the Yoruba, Hausa, and Ibo cultures, among others, and the Marriage and Family site.

SOSIG Subject Guide: Ethnology, Ethnography, and Anthropology: World is an extensive site provided by the Social Science Information Gateway. While it covers many areas of the world and is not limited to Africa, it has relevant links particularly in the following categories: Anthropology of Kinship, Marriage and Family (try the interactive tutorial!); Anthropology of Politics, Law, and Ritual (see Witchcraft in Modern Africa); General and Regional Anthropology ; and Medical Anthropology.

ATLA Religion Index

Indexes Religious journals and books -- useful for articles on religion and ritual.

Research Library

Use for all subjects. These are general database that contains both scholarly and popular sources. If subject searching is unsuccessful, try keywords.

Medline

Use for topics related to medical anthropology.


Sociological Abstracts

The major database in sociology, SocAbs indexes scholarly sources in all areas of sociology from 1970 on.
